Kongsberg has been awarded a contract worth 1.1 billion Norwegian krona ($118 million) by General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada (GDLS-Canada) to provide Protector RS4 remote weapon stations for the Canadian Army’s Armoured Combat Support Vehicle (ACSV) program.
The RS4, part of Kongsberg’s Protector portfolio, is intended to strengthen crew survivability, enhance weapon accuracy, and provide greater situational awareness. The new contract builds on a 500-million-Norwegian-krona ($53 million) order placed in 2020 for the same program. While the ACSV initiative initially involved 360 vehicles, the fleet was subsequently increased by an additional 190 vehicles.
Details regarding the total number of RS4 systems included in the latest contract and their delivery schedule have not yet been disclosed.
Protector RS4
Kongsberg’s Protector RS4 is a multi-purpose remote weapon station designed to support a range of weapon configurations, including small- and medium-caliber guns, coaxial weapons, and anti-tank guided missiles.
The system features a fully stabilized 2+2-axis Detached Line of Sight design that enables continuous target observation and tracking separately from weapon movement. This capability helps improve engagement accuracy, particularly during operations on the move.
With its platform-independent architecture, the RS4 can be deployed across land and maritime platforms and used in both static and mobile operations. Advanced electro-optical sensors and cameras also provide adaptable day-and-night operational capabilities.
Based on the configuration, the system weighs between 135 and 190 kilograms and measures approximately 505 to 765 millimeters in height, excluding the mounted weapon and ammunition.
