Elbit Systems’ German arm has signed an agreement with Cucuyo GmbH to obtain exclusive rights for the military adaptation of the startup’s laser communication technology. The deal allows Elbit to deploy and enhance the technology for defense applications, with any co-developed innovations to be owned by Elbit.

To support this effort, the company is establishing a specialized research and development setup in Germany focused on advancing laser-based communication systems for defense platforms. Early development will prioritize applications in unmanned aerial systems and ground units. By transmitting data through light rather than radio frequencies, laser communications offer key advantages, including higher data rates, strong resistance to jamming, and lower risk of detection or interception.

This collaboration forms part of Elbit’s ongoing expansion in the European defense market, particularly within Germany, where it has been investing in local capabilities. Meanwhile, Cucuyo stands to benefit from Elbit’s experience in electro-optical technologies and integrated defense systems. Although financial specifics were not revealed, the companies expect initial operational systems based on the technology to be fielded in a short timeframe.
