The Danish government has awarded Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace a contract exceeding €100 million ($117 million) for the delivery of the Naval Strike Missile Coastal Defence System (NSM CDS).
This acquisition follows Denmark’s earlier procurement of the Naval Strike Missile to arm its Iver Huitfeldt-class frigates, further expanding the country’s maritime strike capabilities.
The NSM CDS consists of Kongsberg’s fire control system, the Naval Strike Missile itself, and mobile launch platforms. Designed to engage both naval and land targets, the missile offers a range of more than 100 nautical miles.
Denmark previously operated mobile coastal defense batteries equipped with Harpoon missiles until the system was phased out in 2003. Mounted on four-axle Scania trucks, the batteries featured dual quadruple launchers and were originally sourced from the navy’s Peder Skram-class frigates.
One of these Harpoon batteries was donated to Ukraine in 2022 following Russia’s invasion. With the NSM CDS now entering service, Denmark joins Poland, the United States, Romania, and Latvia as the fifth NATO nation to operate the coastal defense system.
