The US Navy has awarded a $30 million contract to Fincantieri Marine Group, part of Fincantieri, to launch the initial phase of its Medium Landing Ship (LSM) program. The agreement includes acquisition of long-lead components along with engineering and preparatory activities required to construct the first four vessels, with construction expected to commence in the fourth quarter of the year.
This step follows a February request for proposals aimed at appointing a construction manager to oversee multi-yard shipbuilding, ensuring faster production while keeping costs under control.
The LSM initiative is designed to deliver up to 35 ships capable of supporting amphibious operations, logistics missions, and near-shore deployments. The vessels will be based on the Damen LST-100 platform, chosen in 2025 for its proven design and reduced development risk. Each ship will measure around 100 meters in length and will be able to carry up to 500,000 kilograms of cargo or more than 200 troops.
With a top speed of approximately 15 knots and a range exceeding 3,400 nautical miles, the LSM is intended to provide flexible and sustained operational capability in coastal and expeditionary scenarios.
