Poland has received 28 K2 Black Panther main battle tanks, completing the first delivery under a 9-trillion-won ($6.5-billion) agreement signed with South Korean defense manufacturer Hyundai Rotem in 2025.
The latest shipment increases Poland’s total K2 fleet to 208 tanks, following the delivery of an initial batch of 180 vehicles ordered in 2022.
A significant number of the newly delivered tanks will be assigned to the Polish Armed Forces’ 16th Mechanized Division, which is responsible for defending Poland’s northeastern territory and strengthening NATO’s eastern flank near the borders with Russia and Belarus.
180 Additional Tanks and Domestic Support Facility
The broader agreement includes the procurement of another 180 K2 Black Panther tanks. Of these, 116 K2GF-standard vehicles are scheduled for delivery by 2027, while the remaining 64 will be supplied in the customized K2PL configuration between 2028 and 2030.
The contract also covers 81 armored support vehicles based on the K2 chassis, including 24 armored bridge-laying vehicles, 31 recovery vehicles, and 25 engineering variants.
In addition to the vehicle procurement, the program includes the establishment of a domestic support center in Poland to strengthen local production and maintenance capabilities.
Polish state-owned company Bumar-Łabędy will support activities at the facility and conduct final assembly of 61 localized K2PL tanks. The vehicles are expected to incorporate Polish components, improved side protection, anti-drone systems, and active protection technologies.
The acquisition forms part of Warsaw’s wider effort to replace older Soviet-designed armored vehicles that were transferred to Ukraine following Russia’s invasion.
Once the full procurement program is completed, Poland plans to operate nearly 900 modern main battle tanks, including K2 Black Panthers, M1A2 Abrams, and Leopard 2 platforms, creating one of the largest armored forces in Europe.
