Denmark is set to significantly expand the strike reach of its F-35 combat aircraft after the US State Department cleared a potential $842-million sale of Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile-Extended Range (JASSM-ER) weapons and related support services.

The proposed acquisition covers 200 JASSM-ER missiles, together with logistics and sustainment support, with Lockheed Martin serving as the primary industry partner for the programme.

Recognised as one of the most advanced air-launched cruise missiles in service, the JASSM-ER offers a stand-off attack range of nearly 1,000 kilometres, enabling aircraft to neutralise heavily protected targets without entering the engagement zone of hostile surface-to-air missile networks.

The missile carries a powerful 1,000-pound penetrating warhead capable of defeating hardened targets and can engage both stationary and mobile objectives. Its guidance package combines GPS navigation and inertial systems, while an imaging infrared seeker provides highly accurate terminal guidance.

The addition of JASSM-ER to Denmark’s F-35 arsenal will strengthen the country’s deep-strike capabilities, enabling precision attacks against strategic assets such as command centres, air defence infrastructure, military airfields, missile facilities, and logistics networks from extended stand-off distances.
