Poland is moving toward accepting about 250 secondhand Stryker armored vehicles from the United States under a symbolic $1 arrangement, part of its effort to quickly grow its land forces amid escalating regional security concerns.

The vehicles would most likely be sourced from US troops currently stationed in Europe, avoiding the need to return them to the United States.

Still, the transfer must proceed through the foreign military sales mechanism, and the offer “is not tied to any changes in the US force presence in Europe,” according to a spokesperson for US Army Europe.

Built by General Dynamics Land Systems, the 8×8 Strykers will first be inspected by Polish specialists to determine their technical condition, operational suitability, and potential refurbishment needs.

Even with the token price, the deal carries several complications.

Major repairs, upgrades, and entirely new logistics and training frameworks will be required since the Polish military has no previous experience operating Strykers.

Experts have also warned that the cost of overhauling and sustaining the vehicles could be substantial, according to Polish Radio.

There are concerns within Poland’s defense industry as well, given that adding Strykers to the inventory could reduce demand for the homegrown Rosomak 8×8 vehicle, which performs similar battlefield functions.

Polish commanders counter that the offer is justified by current security pressures and the need to expand the ground fleet rapidly, especially as legacy systems are depleted or transferred to Ukraine.

Defense Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz also stressed that fielding different vehicle types will enhance interoperability with NATO forces, many of which already operate the Stryker platform.

The final decision is expected in the second half of 2026, pending the results of technical evaluations and the evolving regional threat landscape, according to the Chief of the Polish Armed Forces General Staff.
