NHIndustries has entered into a €15 million ($17.64 million) agreement with the NATO Helicopter Management Agency to carry out a comprehensive assessment of the NH90 Block 2 architecture. Spanning two years, the project will outline the core technical structure and development scope for the platform’s future configuration, aimed at sustaining its operational effectiveness beyond 2040.

The study will center on building a flexible, modular avionics architecture designed for seamless integration of future systems and technologies. It will also propose a revised sustainment model to improve availability rates, lower operating costs, and strengthen mission performance through enhanced connectivity, networked warfare, and integration with unmanned systems. Upon completion, operators will be offered a range of upgrade options aligned with their specific operational demands.

Meanwhile, the Block 1 modernization program—known as Software Release 3—continues to enhance current capabilities. Key upgrades include advanced communication systems, Data Link 22 integration for secure long-range interoperability without satellite reliance, and upgraded Identification Friend or Foe Mode 5 Level 2 functionality. Further enhancements involve a new electro-optical suite, upgraded dipping sonar, and compatibility with advanced munitions such as the Mk 54 torpedo and Marte ER anti-ship missile, extending the aircraft’s lifespan by approximately 15 years.

The NH90 platform, a twin-engine, multi-role helicopter available in NFH (naval) and TTH (tactical transport) versions, is manufactured by a consortium led by Airbus Helicopters, Leonardo Helicopters, and GKN Fokker Aerostructures. Since entering service in 2007, more than 600 units have been delivered to NATO members and allied nations, supporting a wide spectrum of missions including transport, maritime security, anti-submarine warfare, and humanitarian operations.
