Saab has received a 4-billion-krona ($360 million) contract from the Swedish government to extend maintenance and support for the nation’s Gripen C/D and Gripen E fighters, strengthening long-term fleet readiness.
The award expands on a 2020 multiyear agreement that governs Gripen sustainment, modernization, and logistics support.
Under the updated terms, Saab will deliver system support, spare parts, repair services, and training programs for aircrews and technicians during 2026–2027, with options to extend to 2029. It also includes software and mission system updates to maintain technological parity with future operational requirements.
Saab stated that the extension ensures continuity for the current Gripen C/D fleet while enabling the progressive introduction of the Gripen E.
The contract, finalized with the Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), keeps most work within Sweden, supporting local employment and strengthening the national defense industry.
Enhancing Air Power Resilience
The renewal aligns with Sweden’s broader defense modernization strategy, as the country adapts to increased security pressures in Northern Europe.
Upgrades to Gripen C/D aircraft—including improved electronic warfare systems, mission equipment, and support infrastructure—are ongoing, while Gripen E production and deliveries are ramping up for both domestic service and exports.
Additionally, the Swedish Air Force is expanding its operational flexibility through infrastructure upgrades and road base dispersal initiatives, ensuring rapid deployment during emergencies.
