The Irish government has signed an agreement with France to procure five Thales long-range radar systems as part of efforts to enhance Ireland’s airspace surveillance capabilities, according to Irish media reports.
Ireland approved the acquisition in July 2026, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2027 and full operational capability expected by the end of 2028.
The procurement forms part of a broader €300 million–€500 million ($343 million–$572 million) radar modernization program comprising three key elements: land-based long-range primary radar, ground-based air defense systems equipped with counter-drone capabilities, and maritime radar systems for Irish naval vessels.
France was selected as Ireland’s preferred government-to-government partner after its proposal was assessed as meeting the country’s operational requirements.
Ireland has not publicly identified the specific Thales radar model included in the agreement. Thales offers several long-range radar solutions, including the Ground Master family, SMART-L MM series, mobile Master T systems, and Sea Fire naval radars.
