Argentina has moved forward with plans to modernize its land forces after Buenos Aires signed a letter of acceptance with the United States to acquire 235 Stryker 8×8 armored fighting vehicles for the Argentine Army.
The planned acquisition was formalized by Argentine Defence Minister Lt. Gen. Carlos Presti and US Ambassador Peter Lamelas under the US Foreign Military Sales and Excess Defense Articles frameworks.
The procurement package covers multiple versions of the Stryker, including the M1256 infantry carrier, M1251A1 command post vehicle, M1131A1 fire support variant, and M1133A1 medical evacuation platform.
The new fleet is expected to strengthen Argentina’s mechanized formations and follows the delivery of an initial eight Stryker vehicles between late 2025 and early 2026.
Sources have indicated that an initial batch of 50 vehicles could be delivered after undergoing technical inspections at Fort Cavazos in Texas earlier this year.
About the Stryker
Developed by General Dynamics for the US Army, the Stryker is an 8×8 wheeled armored platform measuring around 7 meters (23 feet) in length and weighing approximately 16,470 kilograms (36,310 pounds). The vehicle can accommodate up to nine passengers.
Its protection system includes ceramic armor capable of defending against 14.5-millimeter projectiles, while certain configurations can feature a V-shaped underbody to improve resistance against mines and other explosive threats.
The Stryker can be adapted for different combat roles and equipped with a variety of weapons, including a 12.7mm machine gun, 30mm chain gun, 40mm grenade launcher, 105mm tank gun, and 7.62mm auxiliary guns.
The platform is powered by a 350-horsepower Caterpillar C7 turbodiesel engine, providing a maximum speed of 60 miles (97 kilometers) per hour and an operational range of approximately 310 miles (499 kilometers).
