Ireland has signed a contract with France’s defence procurement agency to acquire five radar systems from Thales, strengthening the country’s airspace surveillance and monitoring capabilities.

The agreement covers four GM400α long-range radars and one GM200 Multi-Mission All-in-One (MM/A) radar from Thales’ Ground Master family. Deliveries of all five systems are scheduled to take place next year.

Irish media first reported the procurement in September, although details regarding the specific radar variants included in the contract were not initially disclosed.

The GM400α is a long-range air surveillance radar designed by Thales for rapid deployment and flexible operation. The system is housed within a 20-foot (6-metre) ISO container and features an integrated lifting mechanism, allowing it to be transported and deployed efficiently.

The radar has an update rate of approximately six seconds, enabling operators to maintain a continuously refreshed air picture and track airborne activity effectively.

The GM200 MM/A, meanwhile, is a 4D active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar designed for multi-mission operations. Its radar, mast and power generator are integrated into a single 20-foot shelter, allowing the complete system to be transported by truck.

The GM200 MM/A can reportedly be deployed within approximately 15 minutes and is capable of simultaneously detecting and tracking targets across low to high altitudes. Its mobility and rapid deployment characteristics make it suitable for a range of tactical air-surveillance missions.

Beyond Ireland, the GM200 MM/A has also been acquired or ordered by countries including Romania and Qatar.

The procurement is expected to enhance Ireland’s ability to monitor and manage its airspace while providing the country with modern, mobile and rapidly deployable radar capabilities.
