Poland has taken delivery of 28 additional K2 Black Panther main battle tanks, marking the first shipment under a major contract worth 9 trillion won ($6.5 billion) signed with South Korean manufacturer Hyundai Rotem in 2025.
With the arrival of the new vehicles, Poland’s operational K2 inventory has reached 208 tanks. The fleet expansion follows the completion of deliveries under an earlier 2022 agreement for 180 K2 tanks.
Many of the newly received vehicles are expected to reinforce the 16th Mechanized Division of the Polish Armed Forces, a formation tasked with defending the country’s northeastern regions and supporting NATO’s security posture along its eastern border with Russia and Belarus.
Additional K2 Procurement and Local Industrial Capability
The wider procurement package provides for 180 more K2 tanks. The first 116 vehicles will be delivered in the K2GF configuration through 2027, followed by 64 locally customized K2PL tanks between 2028 and 2030.
The agreement further includes 81 specialized armored support vehicles built on the K2 platform. These comprise 24 bridging vehicles, 31 armored recovery vehicles, and 25 engineering vehicles.
As part of the program, Poland will establish a domestic industrial center to support K2 production, assembly, and long-term maintenance activities.
Bumar-Łabędy, a Polish state-owned defense company, will contribute to the program by carrying out final assembly work on 61 K2PL tanks. The localized variants will feature domestically integrated components, strengthened side armor, counter-drone capabilities, and active vehicle protection systems.
The K2 acquisition is central to Poland’s modernization strategy, which aims to replace aging Soviet-era armored platforms previously transferred to Ukraine.
Following the completion of its tank modernization plans, Poland expects to operate close to 900 modern tanks across its K2 Black Panther, M1A2 Abrams, and Leopard 2 fleets, significantly expanding its position as one of Europe’s leading armored forces.
