The Indian Coast Guard has expanded its operational fleet with the commissioning of ICGS Akshay, an indigenous next-generation fast patrol vessel developed by Goa Shipyard Limited. The new vessel is expected to enhance the Coast Guard’s capabilities in maritime security, coastal surveillance, search and rescue, and law enforcement operations.

The commissioning ceremony took place at Goa Shipyard Limited in Vasco, where senior Coast Guard officers, government dignitaries, and shipyard officials formally inducted the vessel into service. Built under the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ programs, ICGS Akshay demonstrates India’s continued progress in domestic naval shipbuilding and defense manufacturing.

Named “Akshay,” meaning indestructible, the vessel symbolizes the Coast Guard’s dedication to safeguarding the nation’s maritime domain and maintaining safe, secure, and clean waters. It is equipped to undertake diverse missions, including coastal security patrols, maritime law enforcement, environmental protection, search-and-rescue operations, and support for mariners facing emergencies. The vessel will operate under the command of Commandant (Junior Grade) Deepak Choubey.

The addition of ICGS Akshay supports the Coast Guard’s broader fleet modernization initiative focused on strengthening maritime safety, national security, and environmental protection across India’s coastline. The event was attended by Parama Sen, Additional Secretary (Personnel), Ministry of Finance; Inspector General Bhisham Sharma, Commander of the Indian Coast Guard Region (West); Inspector General Jyotindra Singh, Deputy Director General (HRD); as well as senior officials from central and state governments and representatives of Goa Shipyard Limited.
