The US Army has selected M1 Support Services for its Flight School Next program under a contract that could be worth as much as $10 billion, marking a shift toward a modernized model for training future rotary-wing pilots.
Structured as a 26-year contractor-owned, contractor-operated agreement, the program aims to introduce a more efficient and affordable training fleet to replace the UH-72 Lakota’s flight-preparatory training role, which it has performed since the 2000s.
M1 Support Services prevailed over competing proposals from Bell Textron, which offered the 505 Jet Ranger X; MD Helicopters with the 530F; Boeing and Leonardo with the AW119T; and Enstrom Helicopter with the 480B.
The winning team brings together Robinson Helicopter Company, Quantum Helicopters, General Dynamics Information Technology, and the University of North Dakota Aerospace Foundation. Under the program, the team is expected to support between 800 and 1,500 aviation crews each year at Fort Rucker in Alabama.
R66 to Support Flight Training
The M1 consortium’s proposed aircraft is based on the Robinson R66, which measures approximately 30 feet (9 meters) in length and has more than 1,900 units operating in military and civilian flight training environments.
The helicopter weighs 1,290 pounds (585 kilograms) when empty, features a 33-foot (10-meter) rotor diameter, and can transport up to 1,200 pounds (544 kilograms) of external cargo.
Its Rolls-Royce RR300 turboshaft engine generates around 270 horsepower, allowing the R66 to achieve a top speed of 140 knots (161 mph/259 km/h), fly up to 350 nautical miles (403 miles/648 kilometers), and operate at altitudes of up to 14,000 feet (4,267 meters).
For flight training, the helicopter incorporates advanced equipment such as Garmin G500H TXi and GTN750 touchscreen displays, a 4K camera, impact-resistant windshields, crash-resistant fuel tanks, and a cockpit designed for compatibility with night vision goggles.
