Thales has secured a contract from Germany’s defense acquisition agency to deliver 60 Ground Observer 12 (GO12) short-range tactical radar systems to the Bundeswehr. In addition to the radar units, the package includes support equipment, spare components, and training services, with production and delivery scheduled throughout 2026.

The GO12 serves as a battlefield reconnaissance and artillery-detection radar capable of monitoring drones, ground vehicles, and various other threats across a complete 360-degree surveillance area. Developed for rapid deployment with maneuvering forces, the system incorporates a laptop-based control station, tripod, cables, and a battery pack that enables up to six hours of field use.

Its compact sensor module, with a volume of 28 liters, is designed for backpack transport and can be carried by two personnel together with their personal combat load. A single soldier can set up the radar in under two minutes, while built-in Ethernet connectivity allows data sharing across standard IP networks.

Using Ku-band technology, the GO12 can locate individual personnel at ranges reaching 8 kilometers and detect vehicles or helicopters at distances of up to 16 kilometers. The radar delivers reliable target tracking and positioning even in adverse weather conditions and environments with limited visibility.
