Leonardo is ramping up efforts to secure Morocco’s next training aircraft contract, with the M-346 Master emerging as the centerpiece of its strategy to regain momentum in a closely contested tender.
In recent months, Leonardo representatives have stepped up visits to Rabat, promoting the M-346 advanced trainer to Moroccan Air Force officials, as reported by Africa Intelligence. The aircraft is being pitched as a comprehensive solution for pilot training modernization.
The competition remains intense, with China’s Hongdu L-15 Falcon widely regarded as a strong rival and currently favored by segments of Morocco’s military leadership. The procurement decision is also shaped by broader industrial relationships and past experiences, including Moroccan concerns over costs and maintenance support associated with earlier Leonardo platforms such as the C-27J Spartan.
To strengthen its position, Leonardo is highlighting the M-346’s operational success in Europe and its growing international footprint. Indonesia recently signed a letter of intent for the M-346F variant to replace older Hawk trainers and enhance both training and light combat capabilities.
Meanwhile, Austria has already committed to purchasing 12 M-346FA aircraft in a $1.7 billion deal, and Nigeria is exploring a $1.4 billion acquisition of 24 units — a potential landmark defense purchase for the region if finalized.
