Spanish shipbuilder Navantia has put forward its ALFA 4000 frigate as a candidate for Sweden’s planned four-vessel Luleå program, positioning it as a low-risk and rapidly deployable option. The company has proposed delivering two ships in 2030 and the remaining two in 2031, while emphasizing compatibility with Sweden’s naval requirements and the potential for sustained industrial cooperation with domestic partners.
The design is based on established platforms and integrates Swedish technologies, reflecting Navantia’s earlier collaboration with Saab. A final procurement decision from Stockholm is still pending.
The ALFA 4000 is a versatile surface combatant developed for air defense, anti-surface, and anti-submarine missions. Measuring 120 meters in length and 16 meters in beam, the vessel includes a helicopter deck capable of supporting aircraft such as the NH-90 or SH-60, space for rigid-hull inflatable boats, and accommodation for roughly 100 crew members.
Its combat suite includes air defense and anti-ship missiles, torpedoes, and advanced sonar systems integrated through a networked combat management architecture. The propulsion system combines a diesel engine with an electric motor and generator, allowing the ship to achieve speeds above 27 knots and a range of approximately 4,500 nautical miles.
