The Royal Navy has unveiled plans to procure a fleet of 20 uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) as part of its long-term strategy to build a hybrid force that integrates manned, unmanned, and autonomous platforms.

Developed under Project Beehive, the vessels will initially be acquired at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 4/5 and enhanced through continuous spiral development. Each will feature an open-architecture design to support modular upgrades and ensure adaptability against evolving peer threats.

Serving as testbeds for emerging technologies, the USVs will allow the Royal Navy to refine concepts through real-world operations. The project—valued at approximately £10 million ($13 million)—will be executed primarily across southern and southwestern UK regions.

The announcement follows a live demonstration off Scotland’s coast, where five remotely piloted Rattler boats successfully escorted a Royal Navy warship. Operated from 500 miles (805 km) away, the Rattlers showcased autonomy software, control systems, and networked support technologies.

These developments underscore the Royal Navy’s commitment to evolving toward a hybrid fleet. Future steps include deploying uncrewed escort vessels alongside Type 26 frigates and next-generation submarines in the North Atlantic, capable of independent detection, tracking, and engagement. Additionally, hybrid air wings are planned for Queen Elizabeth-class carriers, with the Navy poised to launch its first jet-powered drone from a carrier next year—a key milestone in maritime autonomy.
