Photonis Defense has secured an order to deliver 1,600 Binocular Night Observation Device (BiNOD) systems to the US Army.
The BiNOD program was launched to develop, test, and manufacture an affordable helmet-mounted binocular system that enhances available light, enabling soldiers to operate more effectively in low-light and dark environments.
Initial deliveries are scheduled to begin by the end of 2026, while the majority of the systems are expected to be delivered throughout 2027.
The order is part of a contract awarded in March 2026, which has a maximum potential value of $352.6 million. The specific value of the latest order has not been disclosed.
The award marks the transition of the BiNOD program from development, testing, and qualification into the Low-Rate Initial Production phase. During this stage, a limited number of systems will be produced and evaluated before a potential transition to full-scale production.
Photonis Defense will manufacture and test the complete BiNOD systems at its facility in the United States. The devices will incorporate image intensifier tubes supplied by its French parent company, Exosens.
Expanding Imaging Production
The BiNOD order follows several recent initiatives by Exosens to expand manufacturing capacity and advance infrared imaging technologies.
Last month, the company announced plans to triple its thermal camera production capacity in response to growing demand for compact imaging systems used in drones and counter-drone applications.
In June, Lithuanian sensor manufacturer BROLIS selected Exosens to provide 17,000 image intensifier tubes for night-vision systems ordered by the Czech Armed Forces. These tubes amplify available light to generate usable images in dark environments.
Earlier this year, Exosens also joined the SPIRIT program, a four-year European Defence Fund initiative valued at 39 million euros ($45 million). The project aims to improve the resolution, sensitivity, and onboard processing capabilities of infrared detectors while strengthening a European supply chain covering semiconductor components, detector manufacturing, and camera integration.
