The US Navy has certified Rolls-Royce’s mtu Series 4000 and Series 2000 marine engines for tactical unmanned surface vessel (USV) applications.
The certification enables the propulsion systems to support missions lasting up to 30 days without onboard human intervention, maintenance, or repairs.
The approvals were granted under the US National Defense Authorization Act after the engines met the required benchmarks for autonomous systems.
