Rolls-Royce has secured a contract from KNDS to provide mtu MB 873 Ka-501 engines for the Leopard 2 fleets across Europe.

The agreement covers more than 300 propulsion units intended for tanks operated by Germany, Lithuania, Sweden, the Netherlands, and the Czech Republic.

Deliveries by the Power Systems arm of Rolls-Royce will begin in 2026.

The deal reflects a surge in demand for defense-related engines, with government orders making up one-quarter of the division’s turnover last year.

The MB 873 Ka-501, a liquid-cooled 12-cylinder diesel engine, generates approximately 1,500 horsepower.

In the Leopard 2 platform, it enables a top road speed of roughly 70 kilometers (43 miles) per hour and a maximum driving range of 340 kilometers (211 miles).
