British off-road vehicle manufacturer INEOS Automotive has received its first orders for military-configured Grenadier 4×4 vehicles from the Italian Army and the Austrian government, marking a significant step in the company’s expansion into the defence sector.
Italy has become the first NATO member to order the military variants, with deliveries expected to commence in early 2027. Meanwhile, the Austrian government has contracted INEOS for enhanced-protection versions of the Grenadier. Austrian armouring and vehicle conversion specialist Valentin Tusch will modify the vehicles for use by Austria’s defence and interior security forces. Initial deliveries and field trials are scheduled to begin by the end of 2026.
INEOS Automotive stated that the Grenadier was selected for its operational versatility, ease of maintenance, and heavy-duty axles designed to support substantial payloads and operate across demanding terrain. However, the company has not disclosed further details regarding the quantities ordered or the financial value of the contracts.
The manufacturer is also holding advanced discussions with other European and NATO military organisations. Additionally, the Team Grenadier consortium, which includes SMT Defence and NMS UK, has entered trials for the UK Ministry of Defence’s Light Mobility Vehicle programme.
Armoured Grenadier 4×4 Targets Military Mobility Requirements
INEOS Automotive has developed the Enhanced Protection Vehicle (EPV), an armoured derivative of the Grenadier designed to improve troop protection against small-arms fire, shell fragments, and explosive blasts.
The EPV incorporates an integrated armoured cabin reportedly designed to meet NATO STANAG Level 2 protection requirements. Available imagery also shows a fully enclosed vehicle body, a snorkel for challenging operating environments, and a front-mounted recovery winch to support mobility and recovery operations.
INEOS is positioning the armoured Grenadier as a potential replacement for ageing Land Rover and Pinzgauer vehicles under the UK Ministry of Defence’s Light Mobility Vehicle programme.
The initial contracts with Italy and Austria could strengthen INEOS Automotive’s position in the military light-vehicle market, while its ongoing engagement with European and NATO defence organisations may create further opportunities for specialised tactical mobility platforms.
