GE Aerospace and Magellan Aerospace have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish maintenance, repair, and overhaul capabilities in Canada for the F414-GE-39E engine that powers the Saab JAS 39 Gripen E fighter aircraft. The proposed capability is intended to support Canada’s future fighter aircraft requirements should the Gripen be selected for the Royal Canadian Air Force. Under the agreement, GE Aerospace would transfer technical knowledge, specialized maintenance expertise, and licensing rights to Magellan, enabling comprehensive engine support from the company’s Mississauga facility. Establishing a domestic MRO capability would improve operational readiness, reduce long-term maintenance costs, strengthen sovereign aerospace capabilities, and create highly skilled employment opportunities within Canada’s defense industry. The initiative also reinforces Canada’s long-term objective of expanding domestic aerospace manufacturing and sustainment while strengthening national industrial resilience through advanced engineering and technology development.
