Taipei is preparing to introduce a domestically developed reconnaissance vehicle as part of its military modernization program, with plans to manufacture 246 units between 2028 and 2033. Created under the Iron Cavalry Project, the platform will enhance reconnaissance units by supporting surveillance, security missions, and counteroffensive operations. According to Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense, the vehicle is intended to operate alongside the existing Humvee fleet rather than serve as its replacement. The Armaments Bureau is directing the project, while the Industrial Technology Research Institute is developing critical mobility components, including the powertrain, transmission, steering system, and central tire inflation system. Meanwhile, the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology is responsible for the advanced electro-optical reconnaissance system. Equipped with a 205-horsepower engine, the four-wheel-drive vehicle offers a top speed of 100 km/h and a driving range of around 500 kilometers. Its extendable mast-mounted electro-optical sensor provides reconnaissance coverage of up to 12 kilometers, while a remotely operated 12.7 mm weapon station enables accurate fire support and self-protection during movement. The new reconnaissance vehicle supports Taiwan’s ongoing efforts to improve operational resilience in the event of a conflict with China. During the upcoming Han Kuang exercises, the military will test its ability to sustain defense production by shifting manufacturing from military facilities to civilian factories if strategic sites are targeted. The exercises will also examine the protection of vital maritime logistics routes and the continuity of military and civilian operations during temporary mobile network disruptions.
