India’s Project Kusha continues to gather momentum after the Kusha M1 interceptor missile exceeded its planned operational range during recent testing. Solar Defence and Aerospace Ltd. (SDAL) Chairman Satyanarayan Nuwal confirmed that the missile achieved a range of approximately 145–150 kilometres, outperforming its original 130-kilometre target.

Nuwal stated that although the trial was designed to validate a 130-kilometre engagement envelope, the interceptor travelled significantly farther, demonstrating strong propulsion performance and additional engineering potential. Defence analysts view the result as a positive indicator of the missile’s future growth capability, as developmental interceptor systems commonly exceed their baseline specifications during testing.

Headquartered in Nagpur, SDAL, a subsidiary of Solar Industries India Ltd., serves as one of Project Kusha’s Strategic Capacity Partners for Production, supplying advanced solid rocket motors and propellant technologies that play a critical role in the interceptor’s performance.

The milestone follows the DRDO’s successful maiden flight test of the Kusha Long-Range Surface-to-Air Missile system from APJ Abdul Kalam Island near the Odisha coast. During the demonstration, the M1 interceptor successfully destroyed a simulated high-speed, high-altitude aerial target while meeting all mission objectives. The interceptor is designed to engage threats at around 150 kilometres, while the upcoming M2 variant is expected to increase the engagement range to nearly 250 kilometres.

The successful test and the interceptor’s stronger-than-anticipated performance underline the rapid advancement of India’s indigenous long-range air defence programme as it moves closer to operational deployment.

In addition to its contributions to Project Kusha, SDAL is actively involved in several indigenous defence initiatives, including the Bhargavastra counter-swarm drone defence system and advanced loitering munition programmes. The company’s growing participation reflects India’s broader Aatmanirbhar Bharat strategy to strengthen domestic capabilities in missile propulsion and other critical defence technologies.

Looking ahead, development efforts will focus on the M2 and M3 interceptor variants, which are expected to deliver interception ranges of 250 kilometres and 350–400 kilometres, respectively. A series of additional developmental trials will be conducted before the systems are inducted into service, with each milestone serving as a key indicator of Project Kusha’s progress toward operational deployment later in the decade.
