General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems (GDOTS) has demonstrated a capability that could help the US Army extend the range and improve the precision of its 155mm artillery systems.
At Yuma Proving Ground, the company completed a key test of its Long-Range Precision Guidance Kit (LR-PGK), successfully guiding 155mm XM1113 Rocket Assisted Projectiles (RAP) at ranges exceeding 50 kilometers (31 miles).
The US Army first publicized the XM1113 RAP’s development in August 2016, describing it as an artillery round designed to extend cannon firing ranges beyond 40 kilometers (25 miles). The projectile was launched from the M109 Paladin tracked self-propelled howitzer, according to Defence Express, although GDOTS did not identify the firing platform in its announcement.
According to the company, the LR-PGK test marked the first time a US guidance kit had demonstrated this capability. The results also validate key objectives supporting the Army’s Mobile Tactical Cannon program while enhancing the capabilities of the legacy 39-caliber 155mm cannon fleet, including systems such as the M777.
Enhanced Range and Accuracy
GDOTS designed the LR-PGK with a modular architecture to improve the accuracy and effective range of compatible 155mm artillery projectiles, including the XM1113, M1128, and other next-generation rocket-assisted projectiles.
The company is conducting additional tests to further improve the kit’s performance and adaptability to evolving battlefield conditions.
GDOTS is not the only company developing an LR-PGK for the Army. BAE Systems is also developing its own 155mm Long-Range Precision Guidance Kit to improve accuracy at extended ranges.
