The Royal Australian Air Force has reached initial operational capability with its MQ-4C Triton unmanned aircraft and MC-55A Peregrine electronic warfare aircraft. Australia has also completed upgrades to its P-8A Poseidon fleet, strengthening the service’s existing maritime surveillance and multi-mission capabilities. Defence Minister Richard Marles and Chief of Air Force Air Marshal Stephen Chappell announced the milestones after extensive testing and preparation for service entry. Triton provides long-duration airborne surveillance, while the Peregrine is intended for electronic warfare and intelligence missions. The upgraded P-8A fleet provides additional maritime patrol and multi-role capabilities. These developments form part of Australia’s wider defense modernization program, particularly its effort to improve intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and electronic warfare capabilities. Canberra’s National Defence Strategy includes approximately A$5.5 billion in investment over the next decade for these areas. The declaration of initial operational capability means the new platforms have progressed from acquisition and testing toward operational employment.
