US defense vehicle manufacturer AM General is modernizing its four-decade-old Humvee platform with upgraded hardware and digital technologies designed to extend the iconic military vehicle’s operational relevance.

The modernization program is structured around three key phases. The first phase focuses on improving mobility and power through the integration of a new 250-horsepower engine, an upgraded transmission, and long-travel suspension.

The new powertrain produces more than 745 newton-meters (550 pound-feet) of torque, providing increased performance for demanding military operations. The engine is also designed to operate on multiple military and commercial fuels, including JP-8 jet fuel, F-24, and conventional diesel.
