The UK government has signed a £708 million ($946 million) agreement with BAE Systems to accelerate the development of next-generation technologies for the Future Combat Air System (FCAS). The contract extends the existing FCAS initiative and supports technologies that will also be integrated into the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), including artificial intelligence, digital engineering, advanced manufacturing, software solutions, digital networks, and enabling infrastructure.
According to the UK Ministry of Defence, the investment strengthens ongoing progress within the programme. BAE Systems will deliver the project in collaboration with Team Tempest partners Leonardo UK, MBDA UK, and Rolls-Royce. The initiative is backed by a supply chain of around 600 companies and academic organisations, while approximately 4,500 people are currently engaged across Team Tempest. Nearly 90% of the employment supported by the contract will remain concentrated in London and southeast England. The company also noted that the funding will advance technologies such as digital twins, model-based systems engineering, open-system architectures, and virtual development environments.
The contract comes shortly after the UK reinforced its commitment to GCAP by allocating £8.6 billion ($11.4 billion) over the next four years under its Defence Investment Plan, supporting the joint development of a sixth-generation combat aircraft with Italy and Japan.
