Oshkosh Defense has begun construction of the first prototype of the Netherlands’ Kaaiman patrol vehicle, a modified tactical platform designed to support military operations in coastal regions and challenging terrain.

The prototype is part of a programme to deliver 150 Dutch Expeditionary Patrol Vehicles (DXPVs), selected by the Netherlands in 2025. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2028.

By adapting its existing Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) platform and established production line, Oshkosh aims to accelerate development while meeting the Dutch military’s specific operational requirements.

The DXPV incorporates several modifications for expeditionary and littoral missions, including enhanced corrosion protection for maritime environments, upgraded suspension, improved off-road mobility, modular armour options and integrated mission systems.

Dutch Expeditionary Patrol Vehicle

The DXPV is a Dutch-specific version of the Oshkosh JLTV, a light tactical vehicle developed to provide protected mobility for military personnel operating in demanding environments.

Rather than being a purpose-built amphibious vehicle, the DXPV is a wheeled land platform adapted for expeditionary operations. Its design requirements include resistance to harsh coastal conditions and saltwater exposure, alongside provisions for integrating future weapons, sensors and mission equipment.

The Netherlands selected the vehicle under its Future Littoral All Terrain Mobility-Patrol Vehicle programme, which aims to equip its forces with a versatile patrol platform capable of operating across challenging coastal terrain and in amphibious environments.

In January, the Netherlands placed an additional DXPV order valued at approximately $25 million to $30 million. This followed an earlier purchase of 150 vehicles in April 2025 under the same programme.

The Kaaiman project highlights Oshkosh Defense’s approach of adapting an established tactical vehicle design to meet specialised operational requirements, potentially reducing development time while providing Dutch forces with enhanced mobility and protection for littoral missions.
