Brahmastra Explosives Eyes Advanced Rocket Artillery Technologies with 128mm Plamen MLRS

Brahmastra Explosives and Ammunition has showcased the 128mm Plamen multiple launch rocket system (MLRS), underscoring its interest in bringing proven international rocket artillery technologies to India as part of the country’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat defence manufacturing initiative.

The company recently presented the Plamen as a compact, highly mobile rocket artillery platform capable of delivering rapid, high-volume indirect fire against enemy troop formations, command posts, logistics infrastructure, lightly armoured vehicles, and other battlefield objectives.

Brahmastra noted that modern battlefield requirements increasingly emphasize artillery systems capable of combining mobility with survivability. The Plamen has been developed around the “shoot-and-scoot” operational concept, allowing launchers to fire a salvo of rockets and quickly reposition before enemy counter-battery systems can respond.

Originally developed in the former Yugoslavia, the Plamen rocket launcher family was designed to provide tactical commanders with effective area-suppression capability across short- and medium-range engagements. Its 128mm rockets are well suited for neutralizing troop concentrations, field fortifications, supply installations, and lightly protected military targets in support of maneuver forces.

The company stated that it is actively evaluating specialized defence technologies from international partners that could strengthen India’s indigenous defence manufacturing base. By combining global technological expertise with domestic industrial capabilities, Brahmastra aims to contribute to India’s expanding self-reliance in advanced defence production.

Potential collaboration involving systems such as the Plamen could strengthen local capabilities in areas including rocket motor manufacturing, propellant production, warhead integration, and launcher engineering while complementing national efforts to expand indigenous artillery and ammunition manufacturing.

India’s current rocket artillery inventory already includes advanced systems such as the indigenous Pinaka MBRL, which provides significantly longer engagement ranges and larger payload capacities than legacy 128mm rocket launchers. Consequently, the Plamen would most likely serve niche tactical requirements rather than replacing India’s existing long-range rocket artillery assets.

Despite highlighting the system’s capabilities, Brahmastra Explosives has not announced any formal partnership, production arrangement, or procurement programme involving the Indian military. At present, the company’s announcement should be interpreted as an indication of strategic technology interest and future localization ambitions rather than evidence of an imminent acquisition programme.
