Colombian armed forces have successfully rescued 39 civilians who were abducted by the National Liberation Army (ELN) while traveling through the country’s Chocó region. The operation restored the hostages’ freedom following a coordinated military mission, although two soldiers were killed during the rescue effort. The ELN continues to operate across remote regions of Colombia, financing its activities through narcotics trafficking, extortion, and other illicit enterprises. The successful rescue highlights Colombia’s continued security operations against armed insurgent groups while emphasizing the persistent challenges posed by organized militant networks despite previous peace negotiations.
