India’s Bhargavastra counter-swarm drone defence system is approaching operational readiness, with Solar Defence and Aerospace Ltd. (SDAL) set to complete its internal development trials within the next two to three months. SDAL Chairman Satyanarayan Nuwal said the indigenous, vehicle-mounted, multi-layered platform has already passed several critical tests and is moving into its final evaluation phase.

Addressing reporters after the system’s demonstration in Nagpur, Nuwal stated that the platform has undergone extensive component testing and is now being assessed as a fully integrated weapon system. He emphasized that Bhargavastra is complete in its current configuration, with internal trials expected to conclude shortly.

According to Nuwal, officials from the Indian Navy inspected the system a day before the demonstration, while representatives of the Indian Army also reviewed its capabilities. He noted that the platform’s micro-missile had previously been tested at Balasore and Pokhran, where integrated trials involving the radar, electro-optical sensors, control systems, and missile successfully validated the system’s overall performance.

Bhargavastra has been developed to provide an affordable hard-kill counter-drone capability against increasingly sophisticated drone swarms and loitering munitions that can evade traditional electronic countermeasures. The demonstration showcased the complete system architecture, including a Command-and-Control vehicle fitted with radar, EO/IR sensors, passive RF detection equipment, and a C4I network, paired with a dedicated launcher vehicle equipped with multiple missile launch tubes.

Nuwal said the system’s radar offers a detection range of 10 kilometres, while its Electro-Optical Tracking System can track targets up to 6 kilometres, significantly exceeding the Indian Army’s present requirement of 2.5 kilometres. He further disclosed that SDAL is developing a new 6-kilometre-range interceptor missile to expand Bhargavastra’s engagement envelope and strengthen its future operational capability.
