The Royal Australian Navy has received its ninth Evolved Cape-class patrol vessel, ADV Cape Spencer (P225), from Austal.
Built at Austal’s Henderson shipyard in Western Australia, the patrol boat is part of a contract launched in 2020 to expand the Navy’s fleet for maritime security, coastal surveillance, and naval missions.
The original six-ship deal was later increased to 10 through contract amendments in 2022 and 2024. Each Evolved Cape measures 58 meters (190 feet) and supports a crew of 32. Its capabilities include modern displays, optical sensors, automated tracking systems, and .50-caliber weapons.
Driven by twin Caterpillar 3516C diesel engines producing a combined 6,770 horsepower, the ship is capable of speeds up to 26 knots (48 kilometers/30 miles per hour) and has an endurance of 4,000 nautical miles (7,408 kilometers/4,603 miles) without refueling.
