Thailand is evaluating India’s BrahMos anti-ship supersonic cruise missile to enhance the Royal Thai Navy’s maritime defense capabilities and strengthen coastal deterrence. The potential purchase forms part of the country’s broader defense modernization program, aimed at building greater strategic autonomy while protecting key maritime routes and littoral regions. The discussions follow high-level defense engagements in Bangkok earlier this year, where India and Thailand reaffirmed their commitment to expanding defense industrial collaboration after upgrading bilateral relations in 2025. According to defense experts, Thailand’s interest in the BrahMos system stems from specific operational needs rather than an effort to counter Beijing’s expanding presence in the Indo-Pacific. Instead, the procurement aligns with Bangkok’s established policy of strategic balancing, enabling it to maintain productive relationships with multiple global defense partners. Thailand continues to source military equipment from China while simultaneously strengthening security cooperation with the United States and other international suppliers. A successful BrahMos agreement would further reinforce India’s position as a growing exporter of advanced defense systems. Following the Philippines’ induction of the missile, India is also engaged in export negotiations with Indonesia, Vietnam, and the United Arab Emirates. Developed jointly by DRDO and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya, the BrahMos missile has undergone continuous modernization since entering service in the early 2000s. The missile employs a two-stage propulsion system to achieve speeds of Mach 3, operates at altitudes approaching 49,000 feet, and can engage targets at ranges of up to 900 km. Its next-generation BrahMos NG variant is significantly more compact, with a length of 6 meters, a diameter of 50 cm, and a launch weight of approximately 1,500 kg, enabling integration across a wider range of naval, land, and airborne platforms.
