After more than three decades without a caliber change, the US Navy is modernizing its MK 38 close-in weapon system with a major fourth-generation upgrade.
The MK 38 MOD 4 swaps out the 25mm gun for a 30mm Bushmaster II cannon supplied by Northrop Grumman, enabling the use of air-burst ammunition and improving lethality against a wider range of threats.
The upgrade also includes enhanced EO/IR sensors and an improved operator interface, delivering a smarter, more precise shipboard weapon system designed to meet today’s operational demands.
