Sweden has awarded BAE Systems a contract to supply four Bofors 57Mk3 naval gun systems along with Bofors 57mm 3P (Pre-fragmented, Programmable, Proximity-fused) ammunition, supporting the Swedish Navy’s naval warfare capabilities.
The Bofors 57Mk3 is already operational aboard Swedish Navy corvettes, including the Visby and Gävle classes. Under the latest contract, the new systems will replace existing naval guns on selected vessels. Deliveries are scheduled for 2028 and 2029.
Bofors 57Mk3: Multirole Naval Gun Capabilities
The Bofors 57Mk3 is a multirole naval artillery system designed to engage aerial and surface threats while providing naval fire support. Its 57mm 3P ammunition features programmable fuzing, allowing the system to be configured for different target types and operational requirements.
The gun can achieve a firing rate of four rounds per second, switch between ammunition types without delay, and accommodate 120 ready-to-fire rounds. These capabilities enable rapid responses to changing threats in maritime operational environments.
The system has a maximum range of approximately 17 kilometers (10.6 miles). Its computerized ammunition-handling and loading system, combined with muzzle-velocity radar, supports efficient ammunition selection and improved firing accuracy. The latest procurement will help Sweden maintain and upgrade its naval gun capabilities across selected vessels in its fleet.
