Naval Group has selected Saft, a TotalEnergies subsidiary, to provide lithium-ion battery systems for its Barracuda and Scorpene submarine programmes. The batteries will be integrated into future submarines, replacing conventional lead-acid technology with more advanced energy storage solutions.
Saft stated that its lithium-ion batteries offer enhanced energy density, allowing submarines to remain submerged for longer periods while satisfying strict defence requirements for safety and operational reliability. The award further strengthens the long-standing partnership between Saft and Naval Group. By manufacturing both the battery systems and their electrochemical cells internally, Saft maintains end-to-end control of the production process.
Expanding Next-Generation Submarine Capabilities
The contract follows continued momentum across Naval Group’s submarine programmes. Earlier this month, the company delivered the De Grasse, the fourth Barracuda-class nuclear-powered attack submarine, to the French Navy after completing sea acceptance trials. The submarine forms part of France’s effort to replace its Rubis-class fleet, with design refinements reflecting operational experience gained from earlier vessels.
The agreement also comes amid progress in Naval Group’s overseas programmes. In June, construction began on the first two Evolved Scorpene-class submarines for the Indonesian Navy at PT PAL’s facility in Surabaya. As part of the programme, Indonesian engineers are undergoing training in France on submarine engineering, construction techniques, and quality assurance to support technology transfer and strengthen domestic industrial capabilities.
