Finland has approved the procurement of the RGW110 anti-tank weapon system manufactured by Germany’s Dynamit Nobel Defence, replacing the 112mm RSKES Apilas, which has been in service with the Finnish Armed Forces since the 1980s.

The acquisition is valued at approximately €84.5 million ($98 million), excluding VAT. Deliveries of the weapon systems, training equipment, and associated operator training are expected to commence in 2027.

According to Finland’s Ministry of Defence, the RGW110 is designed to provide individual soldiers with an effective close-range capability against tanks. The system will strengthen and complement the Finnish Army’s existing multilayered anti-tank defence capabilities.

The RGW110 family is being developed as a successor to the Panzerfaust 3, which entered service with the German military in 1992. Hungary also selected the RGW110 anti-tank system in 2022 as part of its military modernisation efforts.

The Panzerfaust 3 is a man-portable, recoilless anti-tank weapon developed between 1978 and 1985. It has an effective engagement range of approximately 300–400 metres (984–1,312 feet) and weighs around 12.8 kilograms (28.2 pounds) in combat configuration.

In comparison, the RGW110 HH-T variant incorporates a 110mm tandem shaped-charge warhead designed to penetrate modern armoured vehicles, including tanks protected by explosive reactive armour (ERA).

Dynamit Nobel Defence states that the RGW110 weighs more than 3 kilograms (6.6 pounds) less than the Panzerfaust 3 and offers an engagement range of up to 600 metres (1,969 feet). The system can also be equipped with an advanced fire-control sight to enhance targeting accuracy and improve hit probability.

The RGW110 belongs to Dynamit Nobel Defence’s portfolio of recoilless, shoulder-fired weapon systems designed for individual soldier operation. The weapon family is intended to engage a range of targets, including armoured vehicles, tanks, and fortified structures, providing infantry units with enhanced anti-armour and battlefield engagement capabilities.
