Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has acquired a 23% equity stake in Netherlands-based ship design and engineering company Conoship International Holding B.V. for €2.30 million, equivalent to approximately ₹25.10 crore.
The Share Purchase Agreement, along with the Shareholders’ and Cooperation Agreement, was signed with Conoship’s shareholders on 24 September 2026. CSL’s Board of Directors had approved the proposed investment in January 2026, and the transaction has subsequently received clearance from the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM).
The acquisition is expected to be completed within two months of the agreement’s execution.
Strengthening European Market Presence
The strategic investment will provide CSL with access to Conoship’s specialised ship-design and engineering capabilities, supporting its expansion into Europe’s coastal and short-sea shipping market.
The European short-sea shipping sector is increasingly prioritising fuel-efficient, low-emission vessels capable of transporting goods between nearby ports without relying exclusively on long-distance maritime routes.
Through this partnership, CSL intends to combine its established shipbuilding capabilities with Conoship’s European design expertise, engineering standards and market access to develop advanced solutions tailored to the segment.
Collaboration in Alternative-Fuel Technologies
CSL and Conoship will jointly explore opportunities in emerging maritime technologies, with particular emphasis on alternative-fuel solutions for short-sea vessels.
The collaboration will focus on vessel designs compatible with lower-emission energy sources, supporting the maritime industry’s transition towards cleaner coastal transportation.
Both companies will also assess opportunities in coastal shipping and inland-waterway vessels, which play an important role in facilitating efficient cargo movement along coastlines, rivers and interconnected inland transport networks.
The scope of cooperation will extend to additional opportunities across the marine, shipping and offshore sectors.
A Strategic Move Towards Sustainable Shipbuilding
The acquisition represents more than a financial investment, establishing a strategic framework for cooperation in ship design, technology development and next-generation maritime services.
For CSL, the partnership offers an opportunity to expand its international footprint, strengthen access to specialised engineering expertise and enhance its capabilities in designing energy-efficient, low-emission vessels for evolving global maritime markets.
