The Philippine government is preparing to procure over 500 infantry fighting vehicles to strengthen the mobility, protection, and combat effectiveness of its armed forces. Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. revealed that the planned acquisition forms part of the country’s broader defense modernization strategy, emphasizing that the vehicles will enhance troop safety, minimize reliance on foot patrols, and provide a stronger deterrent through rapid deployment capabilities. Although procurement details remain confidential, the new IFVs are expected to complement the military’s existing inventory, which includes Sabrah and FV101 Scorpion light tanks, M113 tracked armored vehicles, wheeled armored platforms, Kia KM450 and K151 Raycolt tactical vehicles, along with various combat support and engineering assets. The planned purchase comes amid a series of major defense acquisitions by Manila. The Philippines is currently in discussions with Japan to obtain five decommissioned Abukuma-class destroyer escorts and Type 88 anti-ship missiles. The United States recently authorized the sale of Bell 505 Jet Ranger X helicopters, while the Philippine Air Force added five S-70i Black Hawk helicopters armed with M134-H miniguns to enhance air mobility and close-support operations. Meanwhile, the Philippine Navy continues expanding its maritime capabilities following a $580 million agreement for two South Korean warships and the operational deployment of BrahMos anti-ship missile batteries acquired from India.
