Safran Electronics & Defense Germany has secured a landmark contract from the German Armed Forces to supply more than 1,000 JIM Compact multifunction infrared binoculars, marking the company’s largest defence order in Germany to date. The procurement is being carried out under a framework agreement established in 2024 with Germany’s defence procurement authority and is expected to strengthen the situational awareness and targeting capabilities of frontline troops.

The new equipment will provide German infantry units with enhanced capabilities for detecting, identifying, and locating potential threats under all lighting and weather conditions. The contract comes shortly after Safran announced plans to invest €50 million ($57.7 million) in expanding its production capacity within Germany, underscoring the company’s growing role in the country’s defence sector.

The JIM Compact is a portable multifunction infrared binocular system developed for reconnaissance, surveillance, target acquisition, and geolocation tasks. Despite weighing less than two kilograms, the system integrates thermal imaging sensors, low-light observation technology, and an embedded laser rangefinder capable of accurately measuring targets at ranges reaching 12 kilometres.

The platform also features advanced functionalities including See-Spot laser detection, image fusion, real-time image and video capture, and live-streaming capabilities. These features make it particularly valuable for supporting artillery fire missions, close air support operations, and long-range precision engagements.

Safran states that the JIM Compact is capable of operating in GNSS-denied environments, offers a battery life of up to six hours, and is designed to perform reliably in demanding operational and environmental conditions. Developed with direct input from military personnel, the system is intended for use by special forces, infantry formations, artillery observers, border security units, coast guard organizations, and law enforcement agencies requiring advanced target observation and identification capabilities.
