The Pentagon’s Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) has awarded specialty metals manufacturer Metallus a contract valued at up to $995 million to supply steel for US defence applications.
The agreement will support the US Army, US Marine Corps, US Navy, US Air Force and US Space Force through September 2031. Alongside the contract award, the DLA issued an initial delivery order worth approximately $125 million, with Metallus required to fulfil each order within 24 months.
Supporting US Munitions Production
Under the agreement, the Ohio-based company will supply High Fragmentation 1 Steel, a specialised material used in the production of large-calibre artillery and mortar projectiles, including 155mm artillery shells.
The contract forms part of broader Pentagon efforts to replenish depleted US ammunition inventories while strengthening domestic manufacturing capacity for critical defence materials and munitions.
Ahead of the latest contract, Metallus had commissioned new reheating, rolling and automated saw facilities at its Canton, Ohio, site to expand production capacity for metal components used in 155mm artillery shells.
The facility expansion was supported by approximately $99.75 million in funding from the US Army and is intended to strengthen the domestic industrial base supporting large-calibre ammunition production.
The latest DLA contract further reinforces efforts to secure reliable domestic supplies of specialised steel and sustain the US defence manufacturing supply chain as Washington accelerates munitions production and replenishment.
