India has extended a broad defence cooperation offer to Colombia, focusing on next-generation drone and anti-drone warfare solutions. A high-level delegation from Colombia, led by Vice Defence Ministers Angelica Verbel Lopez and Angelica Marin Agudelo, visited Bharat Electronics Limited’s Ghaziabad facility to witness demonstrations of indigenous technologies.
The proposal features a comprehensive Anti-Drone Shield designed for combat environments, capable of detecting, tracking, and neutralizing aerial threats to protect critical infrastructure, military installations, and deployed forces.
Colombia has been facing a growing threat from drone-based attacks by illegal armed groups, with numerous incidents involving explosive-equipped drones targeting security personnel in difficult terrain. To counter this, the country has launched a $1.7 billion national anti-drone initiative, making India’s offer particularly aligned with its current defence priorities.
India also highlighted its capabilities in AI-enabled drone swarm systems, which can conduct coordinated strike missions with high precision. These swarms use advanced algorithms for real-time decision-making, enabling synchronized operations and enhanced effectiveness in modern combat scenarios.
Complementing these capabilities are drone cyber protection technologies designed to defend unmanned systems against electronic warfare, cyber intrusions, and signal interference, ensuring mission reliability even in heavily contested environments.
During the visit, BEL showcased a range of enabling technologies, including radar systems, antenna solutions, and integrated command frameworks, demonstrating the maturity of India’s indigenous defence ecosystem.
This engagement supports Colombia’s efforts to modernize its defence infrastructure in response to evolving asymmetric warfare threats. Indian systems offer a combination of affordability, operational reliability, and compatibility with existing platforms.
The interaction also highlights India’s growing presence as a defence exporter in Latin America, with potential for expanded cooperation in areas such as joint development, training, and technology sharing. Experts see this initiative as both a strategic export push for India and a practical solution for Colombia’s emerging security challenges.
