The United States has introduced a new round of sanctions targeting Sudan’s military leadership after determining that chemical weapons were used during the country’s internal conflict. The action follows a US government assessment that Sudanese armed forces violated international chemical weapons agreements through the alleged deployment of prohibited agents in 2024.Following the initial finding, Washington had imposed preliminary restrictions and provided Sudan with a limited period to address concerns and avoid additional penalties. However, US officials stated that the required corrective measures were not implemented, resulting in expanded sanctions. The latest restrictions primarily focus on export controls, limiting Sudan’s access to American-made products, technologies, and services. Certain exceptions remain available for humanitarian operations, aviation safety requirements, communication security, and other approved activities. The sanctions reflect increasing international pressure on Sudan’s authorities over alleged violations of global security agreements. The move could further restrict access to advanced technologies and impact the country’s economic and defense-related capabilities.
