Japan is exploring a new class of hypersonic guided missiles (HGM) designed for launch from platforms operating beneath the sea.
The proposal was outlined in a budget request document from Japan’s Ministry of Defense, potentially marking a significant step toward strengthening Tokyo’s sea-based strike capabilities.
While the document provides no technical details, the proposed weapon is expected to draw on the Type 25 Hyper Velocity Gliding Projectile (25HGP), Japan’s latest domestically developed system for remote island defense and extended stand-off deterrence.
