Following an extensive multi-year procurement programme, the Indian Army has chosen Meprolight’s MEPRO X6 telescopic day sight as the dedicated daytime aiming system for its NEGEV 7.62 mm light machine guns. The selection was made after comprehensive operational testing and environmental trials designed to evaluate the optic’s performance under challenging battlefield conditions.

The MEPRO X6 is a fixed 6x magnification day sight developed to enhance long-range target acquisition and engagement. With a stated effective range of up to 1,000 metres, the optic provides machine-gun operators with improved accuracy and target identification capabilities compared to traditional sighting systems.

The procurement supports the Army’s broader modernization efforts following its acquisition of 41,000 NEGEV light machine guns in 2024 to replace legacy INSAS weapons. Although the NEGEV was originally designed by Israel Weapon Industries, production for the Indian market is now undertaken by the Adani Group through its subsidiary PLR Systems at its Gwalior manufacturing facility.

To fulfil India’s indigenous production objectives, Meprolight has entered into a Transfer of Technology partnership with RRP Defense, enabling local manufacture of the MEPRO X6. Bharat Electronics Limited has been designated as the programme’s prime contractor and will oversee delivery of the sights to the Army.

During the evaluation process, the MEPRO X6 was tested extensively for robustness, precision, and operational effectiveness across a range of environmental conditions. The Army’s requirement focused on acquiring an advanced optical sight capable of increasing engagement distances while providing clearer target discrimination in combat situations.

Meprolight is a leading Israeli developer of electro-optical and targeting systems, with expertise spanning thermal imaging, night vision equipment, laser rangefinders, and illuminated weapon sights. The MEPRO X6 combines compact dimensions, lightweight construction, enhanced optical clarity, and a wide field of view with battery-powered operation designed for prolonged use. Through BEL and the technology transfer arrangement with RRP Defense, the programme will deliver an indigenously manufactured optic tailored to the operational needs of Indian infantry units.
