Garuda Aerospace recently demonstrated its indigenous defense drone manufacturing and research capabilities to the Indian Army’s Design Bureau. Major General Gopal Kapoor, Additional Director General of the Army Design Bureau, visited the company’s facility in Chennai to review its technology, production infrastructure, and localization initiatives, according to The Week.
The visit focused on assessing Garuda Aerospace’s domestic manufacturing capabilities and gaining insight into its ongoing and planned projects supporting India’s rapidly developing defense drone ecosystem.
During the visit, the company presented its portfolio of defense programs, manufacturing infrastructure, research and development activities, and collaborations with industry partners.
Garuda Aerospace also highlighted its expanding drone pilot training network, including its Remote Pilot Training Organisations. The company said the training infrastructure forms part of a broader proposal submitted to the Chief of Defence Staff to train 80,000 Agniveers across the three armed services.
These initiatives are aimed at strengthening India’s unmanned systems ecosystem while developing the skilled workforce required to support the country’s future drone operations.
Chennai Drone Manufacturing Facility
Garuda Aerospace’s Chennai facility spans approximately 50,000 square feet and supports the complete drone development cycle, including design, prototyping, manufacturing, testing, and deployment.
The facility includes injection-molding equipment, industrial-grade 3D printing systems, and battery assembly and testing infrastructure. The company said these capabilities are supported by a team of more than 50 PhD researchers working in areas such as printed circuit board manufacturing, RF antenna technology, communications systems, and Ground Control Stations.
The Army Design Bureau delegation also examined Garuda Aerospace’s vulnerability assessment procedures and testing protocols. These activities are conducted in coordination with authorized agencies to ensure that the company’s systems comply with applicable defense standards and requirements.
Strengthening Indigenous Defense Manufacturing
Major General Kapoor commended Garuda Aerospace’s efforts to expand India’s domestic drone manufacturing capabilities. He highlighted the company’s investments in infrastructure, technology development, and research and development, while emphasizing the importance of indigenization as a core element of India’s defense preparedness under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
The engagement reinforced the broader objective of designing, developing, and manufacturing advanced defense technologies within India.
Garuda Aerospace founder and CEO Agnishwar Jayaprakash said that achieving greater defense self-reliance would require close cooperation between industry, government, academia, and the armed forces.
He described the Army Design Bureau visit as an important milestone for the company and an opportunity to demonstrate its contribution toward developing a more self-reliant and resilient Indian defense ecosystem.
Jayaprakash reiterated Garuda Aerospace’s commitment to the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision and to supporting India’s ambition of becoming a global hub for indigenous drone technology, research, and manufacturing.
