Canberra has awarded Rolls-Royce a contract to supply MT30 marine gas turbines for the Royal Australian Navy’s upcoming Mogami-class frigates, part of a A$10 billion naval collaboration with Japan that may cover up to 11 vessels.

The MT30 forms the backbone of the propulsion system used in Japan’s Mogami-class ships, combining with dual diesel engines to deliver a total output of approximately 70,000 horsepower and speeds exceeding 30 knots.

Alongside the turbines, Rolls-Royce Power Systems will provide mtu Series 4000 diesel generator sets for onboard power generation, supplied via its licensed partner Daihatsu Infinearth.

This propulsion solution is already proven across multiple navies, including deployments on US Navy Freedom-class littoral combat ships and Zumwalt-class destroyers, as well as UK aircraft carriers of the Queen Elizabeth class and Type 26 frigates. It is also used by South Korea’s Daegu- and Chungnam-class frigates and Italy’s advanced amphibious platforms.

The integration of the MT30 into Australia’s Hunter-class frigates further strengthens propulsion commonality, streamlining maintenance and operational efficiency across Canberra’s future naval combat fleet.
